Notes

Though the militant suffragettes were iconic and undoubtedly were a main force behind the ratification of the bills allowing women to vote, there are indeed some issues with the movement. Many people do have issues with violence, even if it is only against property. This strategy though was what accelerated the timeline in obtaining votes.

“In order for nonviolence to work, your opponent must have a conscience.” -Stokley Carmichael

Aside from the tactics used by the suffragettes, there is also the issue of rights for others. Many women were forced out of the WSPU because the organization believed that they should only focus on votes for women. Women were forced out for wanting to talk about living situations, equal wages, equal rights for POC in England. Emmeline Pankhurst even disowned her daughter Sylvia for being a communist, even though Sylvia was an adamant suffragette. Fighting for equal rights is incredibly important and still is to this day, but having one focus while neglecting others needs can be problematic. Indeed the WSPU was founded solely to earn the right to vote, but forcing women out of the organization for caring about other issues seems unsympathetic and cruel. It is always important to note that with the good, there can always be the bad. These women indeed moved Britain in a positive direction, but they most definitely had their faults.
