WSPU: Women’s Social and Political Union. Their sole focus was obtaining the right to vote for all women in the UK. Their party was solely focused on this agenda.
Suffragettes: Fighters for women’s equality that were a part of the WSPU, differentiated from “suffragists.” This was used as a term to disparage those in the WSPU, who quickly adopted it as their new identifier, which almost immediately shut down the opponents using this term in a derogatory way.
Suffragists: Fighters for women’s equality that were not a part of the WSPU.
Votes for Women: A newspaper published by the WSPU.
Militant Feminism: A means to promote equal rights for women. Includes using violence against property, heckling, persuasion, and civil disobedience leading to arrests.
“Deeds not words”: the motto for the WSPU, which began their militancy. A few isolated incidents of militancy were used prior to this motto, but with the decision to make this the motto of the WSPU, this organization officially became a militant feminist group.
